We all have things at which we excel and other things at which we do not do so well. Those things that we do not do well are called our weaknesses. These are simply limitations that we need to understand. Once understood we can then determine how best to work with our weaknesses. However, there is something that many of us do not understand and that is for every weakness we have a corresponding strength. So, what if we look at accepting our weaknesses for what they are? We can then learn how to make them work for us instead of looking at how they limit us. Sound like a good idea? OK, then let’s get started.
You’ve got to take a look
To begin this processes we need to start by taking a good look at ourselves. This needs to be an honest look if you are to really gain something from this exercise. What are your weaknesses? You know what they are, because they are things you deal with everyday in your life. They are things you wish you could change about yourself. And some people do in fact change and eliminate their weaknesses. It is not easy to do and can take some time. So, while you may be wrestling with eliminating your weaknesses, you need to understand how to live with them while they are still a part of you. To get you thinking, let’s just name a few of the typical weaknesses noted by people:
These are a few examples, but you need to come up with your own list of weaknesses and write them down.
Here’s the good news
For every weakness you have, there is also a corresponding strength that you possess. Going back to our list of examples, the weaknesses vs. strengths looks like this:
- Weakness: Obnoxious / Strength: Enthusiastic
- Weakness: Disorganized / Strength: Creative
- Weakness: Stubborn / Strength: Dedicated
- Weakness: Shy / Strength: Reflective
- Weakness: Intimidating / Strength: Assertive
- Weakness: Emotionless / Strength: Calm
Based upon your own list of weaknesses, write down your corresponding strength. Now you just need to understand how to make the combination of these work to your advantage.
It’s all about balance
There are all types of people in this world. By bringing together two people that possess opposite strengths you are able to compensate for the weakness. Therefore, surrounding yourself with individuals who have the strengths and skills that you lack can assist you in overcoming weaknesses in several ways. First, it enhances the learning process. By associating with individuals possessing the talents and knowledge that you are seeking, you may acquire them either through verbal instruction or observation. Secondly, maintaining relationships with others who have character traits or skills that offset your weaknesses tends to achieve balance. Third, by recognizing and leveraging your strengths you will be able to achieve more in a shorter period of time. The key is to understand your weaknesses, embrace your strengths and build a network that possesses the strengths that you lack. By doing this you will have a valuable support system.
What one person possesses as weaknesses, another person possesses the opposite as strengths.
