You Need to Decide to Try Again

You Need to Decide to Try Again

Oh, don’t you just hate it when someone walks up behind you, puts their hand on your shoulder and says “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again” ?

It’s like pouring pure salt into a raw wound, and it hurts, and it sounds so trite, but its good advice, and maybe that’s why it feels so bad. My cuts are still bleeding, and the bruises under my skin are still aching, and the disappointment is so deep that I just don’t know if I even want to try again. But I must.

So here’s where the “decision” has to be made. Here’s where winners and losers separate. Do I take my ball and go home to forever lick my wounds, or do I stand back up and get back in the action? Too often my feelings tell me I’m crazy if I go back at it again, but there is also that little voice that comes from my will that assures me that its behind me and it will strengthen me if I don’t give up.

It’s from the Thomas H. Palmer Teacher’s manual, written in the 1800’s:

 “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.”

And we then may also hear the words of Julius Ceaser:

“Cowards die many times before their deaths;

 The valiant never taste of death but once.”

Maybe we hear the voice of the parent again who said something like these two quotes as we cried on their shoulder after falling off our bicycle. If they pushed us out the door and we got on the bicycle and decided to try again, we were young winners. It was a painful victory, but true victories are rarely achieved without cost.

You need to decide to try again.

It’s more than a command. It’s a necessity for your soul, even if you don’t succeed after trying again a hundred tries more, your soul needs the exercise.

Coach Mike Ditka said this once “You never lose until you quit trying.” and

Author Harvey MacKay has said “Be like a postage stamp. Stick to it until you get there.”

Try Again-1

You need to try again. Many fates may be relying not on seeing your success, but cheering and taking hope from your persistence.
